Strengthening the semantic verb network in multilingual people with aphasia: within- and cross-language treatment effects*

چکیده
Abstract In multilingual people, semantic knowledge is predominantly shared across languages. Providing semantic-focused treatment to people with aphasia has been posited strengthen connectivity within association cortices that subserve knowledge. such should result in within- and cross-language generalisation all languages, although not equally. We investigated effects two participants who received verb-based pre-stroke highly proficient compared patterns finding after the less-impaired, pre-morbidly more-proficient first-acquired language (L1). This observation supports theory greater between lexicon of a L1 system than less-proficient later-acquired language. Our findings could also be explained by both Competing Mechanisms Theory lingering suppression.

A Review of Verb Network Strengthening Treatment
This article examines Verb Network Strengthening Treatment (VNeST), a relatively new treatment approach for anomia in people with aphasia. The VNeST protocol aims to promote generalization to increased lexical retrieval of untrained words across a hierarchy of linguistic tasks, including single-word naming of nouns and verbs, sentence production, and discourse. The concept of the verb network r...
متن کاملEffect of Verb Network Strengthening Treatment (VNeST) on Lexical Retrieval of Content Words in Sentences in Persons with Aphasia.
BACKGROUND: Verb Network Strengthening Treatment (VNeST) is a semantic treatment that aims to improve lexical retrieval of content words in sentence context by promoting systematic retrieval of verbs (e.g., measure) and their thematic roles (i.e., agent (doer of the action, e.g., carpenter, chef)) and patient (receiver of the action, e.g., lumber, sugar)). VNeST is influenced by Loverso and col...
متن کاملTreatment of semantic verb classes in aphasia: acquisition and generalization effects.
Verb retrieval difficulties are common in aphasia; however, few successful treatments have been documented (e.g. Conroy, P., Sage, K., & Lambon Ralph, M. A. (2006) . Towards theory-driven therapies for aphasic verb impairments: A review of current theory and practice. Aphasiology, 20, 1159-1185). This study investigated the efficacy of a novel verb retrieval treatment in two individuals with ap...
متن کاملEffects of Verb Bias and Syntactic Ambiguity on Reading in People with Aphasia.
BACKGROUND The Lexical Bias Hypothesis (Gahl, 2002) claims that people with aphasia have difficulty understanding sentences when the verb's argument structure bias conflicts with the sentence structure. This hypothesis can account for comprehension deficits that affect simple sentences, but the role of verb bias has not been clearly demonstrated in temporarily ambiguous sentences. AIMS This s...
متن کاملEffects of language proficiency and language of the environment on aphasia therapy in a multilingual.
We examined the relative proficiency of four languages (Spanish, German, French, English) of a multilingual speaker with aphasia, JM. JM's self-rated proficiency was consistent with his naming accuracy for nouns and verbs (The Object and Action Naming Battery, Druks & Masterson, 2000) and with his performance on selected subtests of the Bilingual Aphasia Test (Paradis & Libben, 1987). Within an...
